Finally listening to a bit of Shirley Collins these days, and loving it.

Probably not for everyone but I like Chuck Prophet and Steve Wynn, both great songwriters and musicians (beside Hugh Cornwell of course ):

This is a song called Black Honey by Thrice. I love this song, the singer Dustin Kensrue's said "It was written with the US's narcissistic approach to foreign policy" . I think it's very powerful.

B52s back catalogue. Their album tracks are either pretty decent or incredibly cheesy. There appears to be no middle ground.

I loved their first album back in the day, but I recently tried it again and it did nothing for me, I don't think that one has dated well at all tbh...
But I never got familiar with any of their other albums, any recommendations?
Cheers

I played Animals by Pink Floyd today, it really is a beast of an album and still probably my favourite ever Floyd album.
Most go on about DSOTM but for me Animals can't be beat!

I think there's gems on every album - I was even listening to "Whammy" the other day and you can pluck things out of that (i.e "Legal Tender", "Song For A Future Generation", "Butterbean". The early stuff is alright but if I'm honest I do prefer the "comeback" albums in the late 80s/early 90s "Love Shack" aside Cosmic Thing does have some great songs "Dry County", "Deadbeat Club", "Roam", "Topaz" it's the American album the Stranglers were trying to make with 10 but instead of having Nile Rodgers producing like B52s they had RTB pouring chocolate over unfinished songs. The next album "Good Stuff" again has a glossy professional feel and irresistible Americana Summer style songs "Good Stuff", "Vision Of A Kiss" etc. So yeah like I say lots of nuggets to be found.
Depends whether you want the Devo-esque early stuff or the glossy bangers late 80s/early 90s.

See, I much prefer the early albums/tunes. Loved them from early doors, and remember their big early songs beingtheraven1979 wrote: ↑25 Jul 2024, 08:48 I think there's gems on every album - I was even listening to "Whammy" the other day and you can pluck things out of that (i.e "Legal Tender", "Song For A Future Generation", "Butterbean". floor fillers in the kinda discos I used to go to back then, stuff like Planet Claire, Give Me Back My Man, Private Idaho.
And The Lobster too, obviously. I loved the first 2 albums especially, kinda lost interest after Whammy, but as Jimbo says,
there's still some classic B52s songs on it too( I'm thinking Song For A Future Generation, Queen of Las Vegas, Butterbean-
all classic shtick, mibee a bit more polished). And sure, after that they still released the odd banger, Wig, Cosmic Thing,
Love Shack, Roam,Is That You Mo-Dean?, but's it's the first 3 albums for me, in which I include a personal favourite-
Party Mix!, a kinda Greatest Hits for the first 2 albums, kinda remix dub/discofied and it used to be great at partys.
Theres some nice live clips and a couple of shows they did from back then on You Tube which are a good fun watch,
especially the B&W concert footage from the 70s.
Another band I regret not going to see when the played up here.

You've just reminded me that I did go and see the B52s, just once at the Brixton Academy in late 92 or early 93 it was.MiB81 wrote:See, I much prefer the early albums/tunes. Not much I can remember from it now except that the well known/ expected songs were played. They were a great kinda party band for sure...
