Yeah, l was too for a long time. As lve mentioned before, in retrospect it was to the actual detriment of my gig going.

"Nah mate, lm a Stranglers fan, innit"

"Will we go see The Jam at the Apollo?"

etc etc etc
I don't think I was quite that bad, more that I just didn't think of going to see anyone else, though I didn't have mates into music so no-one was suggesting any other bands to me. I still don't, really, as I have no local venue any more and I want to be sure I'm going to enjoy it before I spent time trekking around to various places.

My first gig was JJB Euroman Tour at Digbeth Civic Hall April 1979. Christ, almost 47 years ago to the day! I did see SLF at the same venue later that year. I also caught the Stranglers on the Raven tour at the Top Rank in Brum so quite a good year.

Funnily enough my holy trinity of bands was Stranglers, Clash and the Jam......everything else was secondary but I could appreciate all three of those bands.

Where l came from when we were at school we were always more partisan in our tastes, me and my mates were all into punk/new wave music but it took a bit more to actually fork out and go see a band. There were quite a few Stranglers fans, wee Joe was into Siouxsie, Ant was into the Jam, Peter SLF, and it almost felt like a betrayal to go see someone else. Stupid stuff
Can't see it by satellite, baby, that's cheatin'.

First gig I went to was The Dickies in 1979 at a club called The Sandpiper in Nottingham.
I was still at school at the time so could only make the matinee gig with other mates of my age. The band played another set later for the over 18's.
A few other bands did 2 set gigs there so us young 'uns could join in the fun around that time.

Fast forward a couple of months we realised no one was stopping us from getting into the evening gigs and we became regulars at the venue.
Saw UK Subs, The Revillos, Simple Minds and Slaughter And The Dogs there before the place closed at the end of 1979.

My first concert was a dreadful experience. I had a mate who was into soul music and he dragged me along to see Maze. I hated it.

The first one I actually wanted to go to was OMD.

Stranglers in 81, twice at the Hammy Palais and the Rainbow. Next gig after that was AC/DC at Wembley Arena in 82. Now that's what I call a great start to my gig going life!

First proper gig apart from local bands was the No Nukes Festival, April 9th 1982.

Bad Manners, John Watts, Dave Edmunds, Steel Pulse, some Dutch bands and The Stranglers. Opened their set with Sewer! 🤘

First non stranglers gig was when I was toddler Rock Against Racism in Victoria Park was 78 I believe, it’s one of my earliest memories being on my Dad’s shoulders and I vaguely remember TRB, sadly I don’t remember The Clash, but somehow I was there. My Dad saw the stranglers earlier than this, he died early 80s…

my first gig that I chose to go to was the stranglers at Wembley Arena with the sublime Xmal Deutschland as support, 1986. The first non stranglers gig I chose to go to, with as ever in those days my older cousin who lived in a Cramps T-shirt throughout the 80s, he took me to the stranglers and the following year The Jesus and Mary Chain, it basically put me off mosh pits for life, Darklands is a decent enough album, but they were pretty abysmal that night, the Soup Dragons and a couple of other bands on the bill, who were probably better than the Mary Chain. They had no drummer, and the tape machine started too early on “April Skies”, it was one of those worst ever gigs. I saw them about 20 years later, exact same venue Brixton Academy and they hadn’t redeemed themselves. My older cousin had seen the Mary Chain a lot in the pre-Darklands era and assures me they were at least very memorable gigs 8)

Is this a bloody phishing exercise asking people what their first gigs were or what, hard luck it’s not my answer :!: :?:
