Straighten Out at Eleven, Stoke

Post by Palais23 »

First time for me to see Straighten Out live last night. They played at a heavy rock oriented venue near Stoke. It was well attended - about 300. Much drinking, singing and dancing to an energetic live set. Lots of songs off the first 2 albums, a smattering from other MK1 albums apart from La Folie and Meninblack. The sound of the bass and guitar were authentic and the singing was very good. Apart from the great atmosphere, what I enjoyed was hearing these songs played at a small venue (the smallest venue I have seen the Stranglers was the Hammy Palais). The early songs really came alive rhythmically and danceable- much more than the album versions. I believe that this is what the original songs would have sounded at early gigs and rehearsals. I can see why the Stranglers very soon got a strong following.
I would certainly recommend seeing them. Obviously you don't get JJ but you do get Phil playing Hugh's parts and vocals (which are more accurate than Baz).

I prefer Phil's Hugh to Baz's Hugh and Paul's Hugh. Hugh's Hugh, on the other hand, well.
