Jim Poem..

Post by toilerinblack »

This appreciation piece is for Jim Who has now been with the Stranglers a decade now or so and also within the poem a section on remembering Dave

S.H.I.P.W.R.E.C.K.E.D
onto
No Mans Land

Welcome aboard i'd like to make
Sure that your sat comfortably
For this is about one man's break
Of a drummer called Jim Macaulay.

Jim's always liked percussion
Turning professional in '05
Who after thought and discussion
Was ready to work and strive.

Jim first joined and indie band
called Envy and Other Sins
Who with his speed of hand
Lead their way upon his skins.

They released some singles on Loog
and Gentlemen Prefer Records
Who wisely made their move
Watched by the viewing hordes.

For they entered a competition
Called a 'Mobile Act Unsigned'
Who on their routed mission
Won it crowned the best find.

The program was on channel four
That gave their just rewards
That opened out their closing door
With a deal with A&N Records.

They released an album in '08
called 'We Leave At Dawn'
with their chance to demonstrate
That stardom had been born.

They sang of being 'Shipwrecked'
On the stormy rocks of a lighthouse
That was flashing out as sea swept
saving emotions espouse.

The waves just wouldn't alter
all through the days and night
Keeping heads above water
Saving souls to dry land bright.

They sang such songs as 'Highness'
'Marytr' and 'York Café
Showing no signs of shyness
with confidence never a stray.

They only released one album
before they called it a day
With Jim and his precious drum
Moving on in another way.

For Jim became a session player
To try and make his name
With experience being a swayer
Of getting his name into frame.

Jim played drums for the feeling
Who also percussioned the Script
playing with depth and meaning
releasing wings once clipped.

Jim tuned an album for Suede
Having been a studio technician
who's experience of making the grade
was his accuracy and his precision.

Jim's worked with acoustic drum set ups
With Roland and Yamaha
Producing sounds in deluxe
making him respected by far.

Jim's knowledge in electronics
Has proven to be an asset
For fine tuning with harmonics
accompanying those who have a fret.

Jim's played for i blame coco
Whose recorded with Malpas for years
Before joining The Stranglers to show
That he could fill in all the right gears.

He joined the band in 2012
Due to Jet Black's health
Where tradition wouldn't be shelved
But to help cover for Jet himself.

Making his first deliverance
Were two sets of drums on stage
With Jet making guest appearance
Having two different drummers engage.

Under the Raven's wing
Jet mentored Jim on through
For when the tours begin
With the recordings Jet would do.

Jim sits at the left horizon
Behind JJ standing in front
With the speed of a gunslingers gun
Dressed in black and on the hunt.

Jim plays patterns with respect
To a tempo harsh or tender
To the songs that once was Jet
Leaving a legacy all so splendor.

Jim like's to work by routine
Before each single show
Stretching fingers can't be seen
And squeezing hands with some play dough.

Jim uses a surgical spirit
To avoid getting those blisters
Helping him with the right ticket
To play for the Brothers and Sisters.

His routine he'd never alter
Of being alone in his room
With his pads banana and water
Until it's gig time and then it's.....Boom!

Jim's in the dark after Waltz
Then opens cracking the whip
All together in black that taunts
Prowling toiler's on their ship.

His white knuckles grips the grain
With his vic firth 3A sticks
Where his fingers dances to gain
A teasing tempo that just kicks.

Jim's drum set gives him pride
built up that's best for him
With his black beauty by his side
hitting his skins to the outer rim.

Jim loves his Classic Maple
For it's authentic presence and sound
Whose more than willing and able
Of making the song profound.

His snare's a Copperphonic
Another part of his Lugwig set
That makes the songs a tonic
To the melodies you won't forget.

Jim has a vintage Aqualite
Bought for his 30th birthday
With it's '70s sound so right
Staying true to The Stranglers way.

The Stranglers sang her statistics
of 36 24 36 inch
with a figure of eight with hips
Where Jim wins the numeral clinch.

For his dimensions can be seen
Of 24 X 14 and 13 X 9
16 X 15 and 18 X 16
Where his two drumspots gleam in prime.

Jim plays the beats with substance
Having played with many a musician
With professionalism and conductance
That makes him the perfect addition.

Jim's determined with full passion
That keeps the band together
Whose never out of fashion
With a style that's so endeavour.

Those melodic tunes do come alive
When the lyrics are then added
creating their new wave jive
That gave them success so rapid.

Jim like's to lamp his kit
As subtleties not his thing
As durabilities just the tonic
With a heaviness he like's to bring.

Jim drums with real pursuance
Working side by side with the bass
Together they lead with influence
To a rhythm that's picking up pace.

Jim thrashes his toms to Toiler
Then slashes his snare to Sewer
Like a Tanker needs an Oiler
And a Roaster needs a Skewer.

Hitting his high hats to hell
To the drums rhythm back beat
Who slashes the sound to sell
Making their overall sound complete.

With a second snare to shock 'em
That has a black suede emperor top
With an ambassador hazzy bottom
With it's more fruitier sound it's got.

Jim like's to lamp his kit
As he say's subtleties not his thing
As he belts his ball end stick
Like a bee releasing it's sting.

The Meninblack are back again
With a message to their friend
To the innocence above the rain
Who'll forever be their loving friend.

Looking down from the Hammond skyline
Hearing in tribute to what was once
Those classic key lines that shine
So brilliantly arranged in sequence.

Those tributed notes now played
Travel on through the wooded trees
Along the rail track in the shade
then leaves the blue ocean seas.

Heading vertically up in a rocket
Leaving behind the cloudy sky
With songs first played from a socket
now climbing to space so high.

Those collective notes once arranged
Now head for the shinning stars
That'll stay and won't get changed
As it speeds past Venus and Mars.

As it reaches the Hammond Heights
That's gladly received with a smile
those once majical tunes now unites
that will always stand out by a mile.

Jim co wrote a Stranglers song
On Dark Matters with No Mans Land
For it truely does belong
Alongside others still sounding so grand.

So to the man who drummed on Shipwrecked
Who we know and understand
A real crew member up on deck
Who'll never get stuck on ....No Mans Land!

Didn't he present Mastermind?

Actually no, that was Magnus Magnusson. I suppose a great Mastermind question would be "what is latin for 'great work' and is commonly used to refer to a masterpiece?" and the answer would be "magnum opus" ...
