Best Vocalist of the Punk Era, your Favourite.

Post by Greatkudu »

OK was just thinking the other day about vocalists in the Punk Era, of course my personal Faves are Hugh, JJ and Dave, but I just wondered how people rate others, and it's not about vocal Virtuosity, maybe the sound or tone etc, if had to pick one for pure Vocal talent maybe it would be Billy Idol or Dave Vanian? Vanians voice has developed into a Magnus Opus in recent years and Billy Idol had amazing power and still has. But so many others to choose. Lt Kudu.

Slightly after punk but I like Jaz Coleman's vocals when he sings and is not shouting!

I can't choose a favourite, but from that era (76-79):

JJ, Hugh, Ian Dury, Siouxsie, Vanian, Bon Scott, Ian Curtis, Jaz Coleman, Lemmy, Bob Calvert, Iggy.

What a great time for rock music....

I need some clarification on this.

Do you mean "best vocalist that was in a punk, new wave or post-punk band in the late '70s"? Then my answer is either Hugh Cornwell or John Foxx.

Or, do you mean "best vocalist from around the TIME of punk, new wave and post-punk but doesn't necessarily need to be of those genres"? 'Cuz Freddie Mercury or the lasses from ABBA, obviously. Or David Bowie.

I would pick Poly Styrene, not a great voice but she was a pioneer in so many ways, so sad what happened to her, died of Cancer and misdiagnosed with mental illness, or the wrong diagnosis, but her voice has so much emotion in it, so like I said it's not all about technical Virtuosity.Lt Kudu.

I just can't see any musical movement coming close to the diversity in the Punk and new wave era, brit bop was the last big thing, but very lame IMHO. I will also add I'm my list Kirk Brandon post punk but amazing singer and voice, and still has strong pipes but dropped an octave as he told me a few years ago, a lovely bloke to. Lt Kudu.

I didn't like her singing much tbh

Or it might have been X-ray Spex as the whole package

Honourable mention for Debbie Harry
