The Vibrators...

Post by Boody »

...Are playing live on June 18, in London somewhere Liverpool Street station. Kind of tempted, especially as tickets are only £9 or so. Is Ellis still in the line -up?

I got to see them in Germany a few years back and John was not playing.
I dont really see him rejoining but you never know.

Went to see Knox do an acoustic set in Brixton at the end of last year. 'Whips and Furs' should see The Only Ones tarred and feathered for the rip-off!

Double bill with Charlie Harper from UK Subs. Possibly the worst guitar player I've ever seen.

And I say that as a guy who used to pish on his own fingertips to make the skin harder for ease of slide on the strings.

*that advice supplied by a taxi driver from Greenock. He was possibly lying.

First album is great- Old School punk, second V2 is even better.

They never seemed to take off as I thought they might. Saw them live promoting V2 but the attendance was pretty low although their playing was excellent. Especially the incredible Troops of Tomorrow which was one of those songs better live than on record.

The album V2 starts with a sound effect, a V2 bomb droning, then a silence and an explosion. Then it's straight into Pure Mania and a breathless run of short sharp pop/punk through to the epic finishing Troops.

Ian 'Knox' Carnochan started recording in 1973.
His first band was a Glam Rock outfit and were called 'Despair' ('73 - '75).
They recorded several songs that would later be re-recorded by The Vibrators.
There's an album of those recordings.
The original line-up of The Vibrators was Knox guitar and vocals, bassist Pat Collier, guitarist John Ellis, and drummer John 'Eddie' Edwards.
They did John Peel Sessions in 1976 before either The Damned or The Stranglers.
But like The Stranglers they were not initially considered part of the 'punk' thing and got tagged later.

Since the beginning they have recorded at least 20 studio albums with the line-ups changing regularly from the 1980's onwards. There have been about 20 different band members spending various amounts of time in the band. They have included Gary Tibbs, Nigel Bennett and Don Snow.

The only consistent original member in every line-up to date has been drummer Eddie.
Knox gave up regular live appearances in 2011 but still records with the band.

The current regular line-up is Eddie with Pete Honkamaki on bass and Darrell Bath on guitar.
But various 're-union' shows have different ex-members, including Knox, putting in appearances.

And they covered The Stranglers in 2006.

Thought Ellis was back with them? He's certainly done some dates and rehearsals with them

They did a charity gig at the Hope & Anchor with the original line-up in July 2015. That included Ellis.

Then they did the Islington 40th Anniversary show in February this year with both the current line-up and the two early line-ups of the band. That included Knox, John Ellis, Pat Collier and Gary Tibbs.

They'll probably do more 'reunion' style gigs during the summer.

'Pure Mania' and 'V2' are both classic old school punk albums. From what I've heard there is nothing to get too excited about after that. I'd still like to see the original line up playing the 70's stuff though.
