Fantastic musician, singer and painter. Saw him once on stage in Paris 30 years ago, what an incredible performer ! Barracuda is right : Hugh learnt lot of guitar and rhythm stuff from him. A genius he was.

Depressing news, the world just got a little less weird and interesting.

In the late 80's, the long-defunct (US) mag OPTIONS printed a multipage interview with Magic Band drummer John French, who basically claimed all credit for developing and arranging Beefheart's work. With cads like this in your camp, who wouldn't abandon music?

Just a few years back, French coralled most of the original Magic Bandmates (Zoot Horn Rollo, Rockette Morton, etc) for his album, DRUMBO (on the Proper label). Amazingly, no one had lost a step. The chops were intact, the angular tunes were there, but (sigh), it still wasn't Beefheart.
