Hoover dam, Las Vegas, Nevada

Post by stranglersfan »

My wife and I are going to Vegas for the first time on Aug 27th until Aug 30th.
We are staying at the Golden Nugget for 3 nights and have booked a car rental.
We are really looking forward to it and we plan on driving to see the legendary Hoover Dam on the Thursday morning (bad head permitting!!).
Anyone else seen it before, (not the album cover!!)
Any tips and what exactly to see while we are there??

Cheers

Yeah been there! It's just like a very up-market Blackpool!

You've got to go see the Hoover Dam it's quite incredible and also do a helicopter tour at night over the strip. 8)

A mindblowing place, stuck out in the middle of the desert, a must do is a plane ride to the Grand Canyon followed by lunch in the Grand Canyon Village then fly back over the Canyon & Hoover Dam (you can book this at various places on the 'strip' and a coach will pick you up from your hotel)
Don't forget to go up the 'Stratosphere' and check out the crazy rides up there! they are incredible.

I couldn't believe the size of my room in my hotel, it was one of the cheapest but was fooking huge! and those hotels are massive too, you can almost get lost in em!.
Overall a great city, very surreal though.

I went there a good many years ago and it is certainly one of life's experiences, and quite breathtaking. It has no doubt changed a great deal since my visit but I remember simply wandering through these giant casinos with light aircraft and luxury cars on podiums as prizes, and the whole place designed as a fantasy land. The stage shows are pretty top line stuff too. It is a place that everyone should visit once.

Hoover Dam is both a masterpeice of civil engineering and a thing of beauty with its art deco styling. We went on a guided tour right down into the bowels of the thing and found it fascinating. Its a great antidote to the madness of Vegas and not to be missed under any circumstances.

I'm sure you will have a great time. I don't know if your a gambling man Simon, but its as well to remember that Vegas is built from the proceeds of losers not winners. (Unlike the Hoover Dam that is built largely from concrete).

1. Watch the water display outside the Belagio
2. Treasure Island outside show is worth watching.
3. Wander through all of the casinos (NY, NY, Aladdin, Venetian & Caesars Palace (wait for the time show) are probably the best)
4. Grand Canyon ain't that far away. You can get helicopter flights from Vegas to the big ditch.
5. Think that the Hoover Dam guided tours have either stopped or been severely scaled back due to terrorism concerns.

Pity you didn't have longer, because trips to both Zion National Park and Bryce canyon are a must.

Something away from the bling, since you'll have a car, the Valley of Fire is something else. Lives up to its name, hot as hell, red sand everywhere:

Dedicated in 1935, Valley of Fire is Nevada's oldest State Park. It is located only 50 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The rough floor and jagged walls of the park contain brilliant formations of eroded sandstone and sand dunes more than 150 million years old. These features, which are the centerpiece of the park's attractions, often appear to be on fire when reflecting the sun's rays.

You could always spend an afternoon at Lake Mead (largest man made lake in the USA) which is only 30 miles out of Vegas. It's the water from this lake which Hoover Dam holds back.

Make sure your car has air conditioning as you can look forward to 110 degree climate!

Have a great time!
Trust in God, but lock your car

Thanks for your advice everyone. We will be talinkg plenty of pics no worries.
Actually, i am quite excited and am really looking forward to it. Not really a gambler which is why i wanted to see something else, like the dam, for a few hours.
Will probably try to take in a comedy show as well. there is so much to do it is hard to choose one particular thing!!
I realise there is a tackiness to Vegas as well, but thats the fun part right??

Thanks again for taking the time guys.

Mate of mine who's a singer has been offered 5 weeks out there performing with a full band. Can you believe this - he is dithering whether to do it or not?

But 5 weeks in Las Vegas??? How can you not?

Mrs Toiler and I were considering the Elvis Drive-Thru Wedding in Vegas, after seeing it on some Holiday show.
