It is the one song that they are identified with so much so that it is undroppable from the set lists of The Stranglers and Hugh.Bit of a shame really,but I suppose even now you will still get casual fans who would go away disappointed if it wasn't played.

I do like Golden Brown but more accurately i like the sound of the live version rather than the studio. Listening to GB on La Folie it feels a bit lame.

But the worst thing about the song is when you say you like the Stranglers someone always replies with oh yeah they did Golden Brown i like the stranglers too. I am thinking yeah i know you have no idea what they were really like as a band or the music..

The good thing about GB is that everybody knows it even if they've never heard of The Stranglers.
Eg just the other day I was talking to a cousin down in south Italy.
He's in his 20s and plays a bit of guitar and says he likes "punk bands" like Greenday & Blink182.

I said my favourite band of all time was an old band called The Stranglers. He went blank, until I mentioned Golden Brown. Within seconds he had it playing on his phone...

I’d much rather the Stranglers were best known for No More Heroes or Duchess. Both (just 2 examples) are much better songs and better singles too.

Off thread I absolutely love Golden Brown,it's just a sublime work of Genius,the lyrics,the melody,the guitar solo,Jets Jazz drumming,I don't think it really matters that that's the song the general public know, but it really is one of the greatest songs ever written end of,and one of the most radical songs to be so successful with the Heroin theme as part of the song.Major Kudu.
