NME to stop producing their print edition after 66 years
This is obviously sad for the people involved and many will say it highlights some kind of apathy toward popular music, but that would be incorrect. There are dozens and dozens of printed word music papers and magazines that still exist and are well worth purchasing, and just as many free ones as well (See The Skinny).
NME made the mistake of pandering to the bottom line and long-since stopped being a serious music magazine. It has been utterly worthless for years.
In it's heyday it was essential reading and in those pre-internet days was one of the few sources of information about what was the next big thing.
But when it decided to do a hatchet job, it was relentless.
So it's ironic that a band that was once requested to 'knock it on the head for god's sake' is still alive and kicking on the day the NME ceases publication.

It's not that surprising, I'm sure the print version has been free for the last few years.

I read it for a bit during my student days until I realised it was talking absolute guff, it became laughable in a way.

Was more of a Sounds man, myself.

They were never very complimentary about the Stranglers we're they, so no loss!

Vive Le Rock for me, great magazine.

I'd forgotten about sounds, I really liked that magazine. I read the melody maker, too even though it wasn't cool.
I think nme's problem was that their target audience doesn't exist anymore. My children love music, but would never buy a music magazine. Downloading cheap and instant, they don't need journalist opinions.

I've still got all my Stranglers press cuttings from 1977 onwards from NME, Sounds and Melody Maker. There was some great interviews with The Stranglers, but I will always remember in particular and quite fondly JJ & Dave coming tops in the polls for Bassist & Keyboard Player for a few years.
But yeah fuck em.
The NME, not JJ & Dave!
