Making Plans for XTC - stay up for the Partridge !

Post by jonimac »

In my opinion the UK most inventive group.
If you are wanting something to watch this Saturday night, Sky Arts has an XTC documentary.
There is so much more to them than "Making Plans For Nigel".
Genius is an overused word, but actually underused in their case.

TBH, other than a few singles (Generals and Majors...) I pretty much gave up on XTC after 'Drums and Wires' LP. For me the genius was 'GO 2' - along with 'B&W' these were the albums that took over my turntable for a while in late '78. Never really the same after Barry Andrews left and they stopped touring to concentrate on studio craft - but hey, that's only my opinion.

P.S. RUDI supported them in Belfast 8)

Still one of my all-time favourite bands. All of their albums are brilliant in different ways.

But I'm setting the recorder 'cause I'm off to Skegness. No Stranglers this year but plenty to keep me amused.

Pretty good, interesting and funny 'rock'umentary 'This Is Pop'. As stated previously, I sorta 'fell out' of interest as they progressed away from the punkier/new wave style - but (surprisingly) I was still aware of a lot of the music references used in the film. Obviously a band that can still creep under your skin without you realising they are there.

It also gave an insight into the 'mental' issues Andy Partridge had - I knew he/the band stopped touring due to his mental health, but the 'full' story was enlightening (and tinged with sadness as the rest of the band didn't really understand what was going on).

However, the biggest mystery was...... who owned the train-set? That was some diorama!!
