Manics - Ultra Vivid Lament

Post by theraven1979 »

Anyone listening to this this morning? Rather good isn't it?

Expansive!

Unmoved so far, apart from the singles.

I thought the lengthy opener "Still Snowing In Sapporo" is stunning. The only one that hasn't kicked in for me is the duet with Mark Lanegan

Dunno....for whatever reason I struggle to rekindle my love for the Manics, nearly every song for the last umpteen years seems to be predictable.

High points for me are Orwellian, Blank, Into Waves and Happy Bored.

For some reason I still expect them to be spitting fire in reaction to the worst of times we are living through but it's more of "that's life innit?" shrug.

Having said that my hearing is shredded after playing DM

When interviewed when they were writing the album they said they wanted to avoid the pandemic etc. I think that was a good move.

Certainly business wise but there's plenty to be angry about besides the pandemic...guess they're like most people of a certain age - tired with it all.

Pretty much agree with this, just had my first listen through and haven't been overly bothered by it.
Sapporo is pleasant enough, I like the synth part, but it's unlikely to become a favourite.
Orwellian is a good choice for a single but again it's a pretty predictable Manics single, with some Abba flavour...
Secret He Had Missed was very Abba again but quite pleasant enough.
I thought the guitar solos throughout were excellent and the highlights of the record.

Overall - a pleasant enough Abba-tinged Manics album (although I'm really not an Abba fan) with too much piano and not enough guitar. Lots of the "same old" recent Manics sort of stuff. Certainly in my bottom five Manics albums, and most likely in my bottom three along with Resistance is Futile and Rewind the Film... oh well...

Diapause - probably the only song on the album not dripping in Abba is IMO the best song. Hints of Roxy Music but catchy as fuck.

Haven't heard it yet as I've been listening to something else.
However an album that features my home town Tenby gets my second place of the week.
Nicky Wire got a holiday gaff there.

Can’t get it out my head
But that’s not a bad thing.

That's a great song. I like the melodic Diapause also. It's a great album.
