Trout Mask Replica
As we touched upon this yesterday - Any fans?
I bought this in my teens and just couldn't get into it at all; sold it on Ebay then years later I wanted to hear it and realised I'd flogged it so I bought it again. Hated it, so I gave it to a friend. Then in my 30s I really got into it again (and bought it again). I guess it's difficult to get into but once it clicks there's some really cool stuff on it.

I haven't got into them at all. I've just heard bits and found it unlistenable! So does their stuff grow on you then?theraven1979 wrote: ↑12 Aug 2021, 10:23 As we touched upon this yesterday - Any fans?

Absolutely, I think the first time you hear it you think it sounds like a load of musicians playing different songs at the same time (sound familiar?). But there's some incredibly fine musicianship (IMO) going on. Some of the bass and guitar signature rhythms and riffs are so tight and melodic as anything.

Yeah, I'd be lying if I said I got into it on first listen, but then I don't think anyone does. Not only was it some quite unorthodox music in the rock format for its time, but being a double album there's a lot of it
Guitar-wise I can hear a lot of influence on the way XTC's Dave Gregory and Andy Partridge used to come up with these guitar parts that would grind against each other awkwardly or disagree with each other, but which would provide this interesting effect.
Vocally, I can def. hear an influence on the way Hugh approached several Stranglers moments.
And there's so many quotable moments on this!
"FAST AND BULBOUS!" ... "That's right, The Mascara Snake, fast and bulbous!"

The less dissonant tracks sound like they were a huge influence on 90s math rock like Polvo and Thinking Fellers Union Local 282.
