"Futurology" remains one of their finest releases, it's very early '80s Simple Minds in places - think stuff like "I Travel" and "Theme for Great Cities" ...

I think they admitted that was an influenceStanInBlack wrote:"Futurology" remains one of their finest releases, it's very early '80s Simple Minds in places - think stuff like "I Travel" and "Theme for Great Cities" ...

I thought the last one Resistance is futile was even better.

Re: James Dean Bradfield
At this point I'd rank Resistance is Futile alongside Postcards from a Young Man - the sort of sweeping, dramatic rock album they can do in their sleep, whereas Futurology was more out on a limb and better for it.

Re: James Dean Bradfield
Completely agree. Futurology is far and away their best of the past decade imo. I found Resistance is Futile pretty disappointing tbh and not dug it out for a while.StanInBlack wrote: ↑09 Jul 2020, 10:32At this point I'd rank Resistance is Futile alongside Postcards from a Young Man - the sort of sweeping, dramatic rock album they can do in their sleep, whereas Futurology was more out on a limb and better for it.

Re: James Dean Bradfield
What amazes me is they're a band perhaps in their Autumn years that can still bang out a decent album. And I don't mean just rock n roll, they're still pretty experimental.

Re: James Dean Bradfield
Yeah, definitely agree with this. I get more out of their post-Richey work than I do the first three albums these days. I like how they're this big "name" band that just do whatever feels fresh and exciting to them at the time, and they somehow almost always manage to pull it off and take their audience with them.theraven1979 wrote: ↑09 Jul 2020, 12:33 What amazes me is they're a band perhaps in their Autumn years that can still bang out a decent album. Recent interview here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb9eEJX ... e=youtu.be . At the 14 min mark he mentions the Manics needed to take time out to refresh. Wish another band did that in 1990
