In my humble opinion it's mostly a load of shite. The worst Damned album by quite some way.
Bluesy and lacking in much originality or humour, full of riffing but not much in the way of tunes.
"Testify" is the best track by quite some way, "I Need a Life" is ok too... it's all just terribly dull...
It's the only album I've never seen them play anything from, even the much maligned "Music For Pleasure" gets more love than this one.

Sorry I didn't realise if this has been discussed already.
Re: Damned I'm alright Jack & the Beanstalk album
And Not of this Earth? That's mentioned on Wikipedia too. Anyone heard that one?
Re: Damned I'm alright Jack & the Beanstalk album
Same album with different title, not a bad album but it's The Damned going back to an older sound or two of them as it's just Mr Vanian and Scabies
think scabies liked it as he wasn't keen on the "Phantasmagoria" period thinking it was to commercial.

I flicked through this album on Spotify but it didn't really grab me. I really like Phantasmagoria. It's one of my favourite albums of all time. The Black album sounds good too. I might have to buy that one.

Yeah bit of a disappointment this one. Yeah Testify and I Need a Life are probably all you can rescue from this era.

NOT OF... was my entry point to the band after purchasing A DAY IN THE LIFE OF CAP'T SENSIBLE. I kept thinking, "Wot's the appeal?"
Re: Damned I'm alright Jack & the Beanstalk album
It's not the worst album I have ever heard but musically it's going back to the earlier Damned sound,But I don't think The Damned have ever released
an album as bad as "Coup De Grace" now that's a shocker.

At the time, the band and the album were a massive disappointment and it broke my heart.
I remember leaving a gig totally gutted
Took a longtime to forgive them but I did.
This album has some good songs and some great playing and I have come to like it for what it is. If it was "scabies and Vanian" then it might have more context, but try it out. Recently been bootlegged on vinyl - just as I was in discussions with Scabies about doing a proper re-issue!

The line-up that recorded it were together a little over 2 years.
Some of the live gigs in '94 were the most animated I'd seen Dave Vanian in a number of years following the 'big hair/big label' period.
They recorded the 'Molten Lager' live album which I regard as one of my favourite live albums.
Dave Vanian disowned that period and the album later; probably as the songs were mostly written by Alan Lee Shaw and so there's no royalties coming in.
But you can tell he was enjoying himself at the time. Plenty of filmed evidence of that.
It's not their best album but I'd rather listen to it than 90% of the 'Anything' album and it filled a gap until Captain came back on board after his 14 years solo.
And I think those who wrote off Alan Lee Shaw (Twink, The Rings, The Maniacs, The Physicals, Brian James' Band, etc....), Jason 'Moose' Harris (New Model Army) and Kris Dollimore (The Godfathers) as just 'a bunch of session musicians' showed a lack of musical knowledge outside of 'The Damned'. But a lot of them claim not to listen to any other music anyway and are proud of it. Personally I'd find that a bit 'limiting'.
Anyway, you either like it or you don't. Same as any album. :)
