Ian Dury - Wordsmith of Upminster
Ian Dury was a rather splendid and truly unique quintessentially British character, a master wordsmith combining observational humour and sharp rhymes in his timeless lyrics. The plethora of song 'characters' were always realistic in the context of their settings and their lyrical content especially 'Billericay Dicky' and 'Plaistow Patricia' an all round Cheeky Chappie for the late 1970's (I'm sure Max Miller would have approved). There's just too many examples of his excellent lyrics in the back catalogue to choose from for me personally, would like to here your choice of lyrics though so please post away. "There ave alf been some clever bastards"

We're privileged as Stranglers fans, that such a talent performed with the band while Hugh was being entertained at Her Majesties clink...

On the same subject as above with attitudes changing- Wake up and Make Love to Me- 'it's lovely while you're sleeping' would now be classed as rape!

But with a consenting adult albeit asleep and not violently forced... He also emphasised in a radio interview that the lyric was:gjinblack wrote:On the same subject as above with attitudes changing- Wake up and Make Love to Me- 'it's lovely while you're sleeping' would now be classed as rape!

"Wake up and make love WITH me" to show empathy toward his partner. But yeah, basically rape!

In my yellow jersey, I went out on the nick.
South Street Romford, shopping arcade
Got a Razzle magazine, I never paid
Inside my jacket and away double quick
Good sense told me, once was enough
But I had a cocky eye on more of this stuff
With the Razzle in my pocket, back to have another peek
