Hooky - Joy Division - Biography - MIB link

Post by Burn e 77 »

It was interesting to see Eric's (evonx's) post regarding Peter Hook's "Thank you to JJ Burnel" credit in his Joy Division biography... just bought it... and also in the front section he has a photo of old gig tickets of bands that he went to see and that ostensibly influenced him musically... really good to see a Stranglers ticket amongst them 8)

We've had a book festival here in Sheffield called "Off the shelf" and I went to the talk at Sheff Uni where Hooky was interviewed about the book. He was asked about his bass-playing influences and mentioned JJ for the sound and Paul Simonon for the look. He said that he wanted JJ's bass sound so he bought an amp and head the same as his. He said it was quite customised gear and there was no guarantee one amp and head would sound the same as the others but that he got luck with the one's he bough.

He says in the book that he saw the band at Bingley Hall around 1978 and whilst standing at the front wrote down all of JJ's kit on stage then went and bought it. Loved the JJ sound and the Simonon look.

Didn't have good things to say about the road crew though when supporting the band at The Rainbow gig when Hugh was in Pentonville. Says he was ushered off stage whilst 'ogling' JJ's set up and roadies wouldn't let them move any kit to do their soundcheck. Crew were swanning around like they owned the place because they were the 'pop stars' Says he was gutted and left a grudge he held for years promising he would never treat a support act like they had been treat.

Not a bad read though

This was apparently just issued in the US.
