I must admit I don't think I've ever heard of him . Then I have probably never really moved away from the punk/Stranglers era . Looking at the bands he was associated with he sounds pretty influential .

Along side John Peel, I would have thought he was 'THE' most influential man in music in living memory.

24 Hour Party People, the film, is a fitting tribute to the man.

A true visionary. RIP Tony.

Hacienda that!
If Dave was to use a Hammond L100 for just one more gig I'd die content.

Always had him down as a bit of a genius but then I saw his channel 5 show - Topranko!

Anyway he's done soooo much for Manchester and the North of England even if he didn't sign the Smiths - RIP

Not all saw how good he was for music and yoot culture. I just think it's another north-south divide where northern englanders rate him, and southern pooftas don't get it. Like the smiths and joy division, they were so parochial (provincial?) they weren't easily digested daan sarf... unlike man utd, the one that proves the rule!

I'd agree with that. Although largely due to television documentries, I am aware that something went on in Manchester, the actual scene itself was unknown to me at the time, and remains a very northern thing now.
I recently listened to Stuart Maconie's radio doc. about The Smiths in a effort to understand why people are so passionate about the band, but statements like "urban decay of working class streets reflected in teenage angst" leaves me asking the question "What the fuck is he talking about"
I certainly don't think "the Manchester scene" had much impact 'round 'ere.
Sad loss for the poor chaps family all the same.
I tried to make him laugh, He didn't get the joke, and then he said I wasn't right in the head.
