Surely you did 2.5k miles last week?

Jim

Canada...not America enough for ya ?.....well that can be arranged a short bus trip from canada to the bombed out shell of inner city detroit can be arranged for that genuine "authentic" feel...

seriously...you can combine Toronto. Montreal and New York....theres cheap airfares out of Toronto to New york....putting all biases aside New york is superb, Toronto and Montreal are also in their own ways -

plus my mrs is over her illness so I can make bevvies - which I could with Jim but sadly couldn't with toiler...

PS...as Jim can attest - we have a pub with a great jukebox.

In my previous job I travelled all over the US, though in most cases only ever stayed in one place for a day or so before moving on.
My two favourites are:
1. Seattle - I remember hearing that it was voted the best place to live in the whole of the US, due to the close proximity of sea, mountains, lakes, forest etc. The climate is similar to the UK, with quite high rainfall compared to other parts of the States, but don't let that put you off. It's a fun place, and close to Vancouver which is reportedly the best place to live in Canada, so a week in each would make a great holiday.
2. San Francisco - worth going just to watch the fog roll in and out under the Golden Gate Bridge with no warning. Blue skies and sunny one minute, pea soup fog the next. Alcatraz is also worth a visit. Don't try to walk too far in SF, as the hills will cripple you - take a tram ride and hold VERY tight. Also worth the drive down Big Sur - incredibly scenic coast road, it seems like every time you round a corner, the view gets better.
Be aware that in California lots of people are on the health kick (drink bottled water, decaf coffee, no alcohol, no red meat etc) and you can get a few strange looks when you order your 3rd beer. "Jeez, you Brits are heavy drinkers" is what one waitress said to me when I asked for another bottle of beer, which brought my consumption for that meal to a pint and a half.
I think this becomes more exaggerated the closer you get to L.A., so there's plenty of sport to be had.

Really enjoyed reading that Mr Laker.

Regarding your comments about brits abroad. Me and the Lammy had a similar issue in Toronto recently. We were getting in a few light ales at around 3pm one afternoon when I spilt me pint and the barman refused to serve us. "I just think you've had enough". I did resist the temptation to go back at midnight after a further 9 hours drinking and shout at the barman "Now I've had enough!" - To make matters more ironic this was in an "English themed" pub

That's outrageous Jim!

Luckily, I never experienced this low alcohol drive when I was out in the US. Did get refused service in one bar in Florida once as I was overcome by the heat (errr..) and collapsed and my head hit the bar knocking me clean out so it was goodnight from me after that but on the whole I found the approach to having a good ole knee's up to be pretty much on a par with the UK for people in the 20-30 age range.
If Dave was to use a Hammond L100 for just one more gig I'd die content.

I've been Disneyed in Forida and on the whole didn't really enjoy the experience. I think a lot of it was due to the mother in law being with us and poor daughter getting severe stomach bug which lead a trip to hospital and a bill for $1,500. Thank goodness for insurance. The most annoying thing was that the bread was soooooo sweet. Everything is full of sugar. And you have to drive everywhere!

Also been to LV and heard gunshots. Got kicked out of a casino cos I was a bit on the young side.

Grand Canyon is well worth it and I enjoyed the walk down to the Colarado river and going paddling. The walk back was interesting - an upside down mountain. I'd go travelling round there quite happily but if I was to go back it would be New England in Autumn.

I always thought Cananda was America but without the violent deaths.
