They said on the BBC that he was South Africa's great man, but I have to disagree, he was the World's greatest man.

A great man. I had the privilege to meet him in singapore in 1998 - i was just awestruck in his presence. I was living in southern africa at the time of his release and the transition years, and the end of apartheid simply would not have happened in the way it did without him ...

I remember watching him being released on a Sunday morning (Well I started watching in the morning, but it took a few hours) and I thought to myself, who is this man that can bring the world to a standstill, being released from prison!!! I knew of him, but when I saw him and realised that he was being so dignified about it and black and white people were waiting for him and cheering him on, I knew he was somebody special, but never realised how special until later in life.

Even when I told my son this morning that he had died, he gasped and said Oh no! I thought this was a bit strange for a 14 year old to be saying that, but they were having a special section at school called Watching Living History being made and had just talked about him.

A great leader and man, a true loss but I'm at least relieved his death hasn't been too much of a shock to the world.
Think I'll go for a stroll in the trees.
