Just strap on your guitar and we'll play some rock 'n' roll

Post by Arthur Streeb-Greebling »

Thought it was about time for a thread for us Guitar players to hang out (kinda like a virtual guitar bar/pub)
Bass players are welcome too.

Right then i'll have a pint and a bag of plectrums please.

Fave chords anyone?
Try this, the famous chord at the end of the James Bond theme, as played by Vic Flick and known as the the 'Spy Chord' or from what I am read to believe a - Gmaj7#5/E

This is a nice chord, has a 'Lydian mode' flavour about it

If you are a bit of a masochist then try playing it at the first fret in F -

Ouch.
Be careful it can hurt, always best to practice these type of chords higher up the neck.
These chords are added 9ths/ 7ths or summat, not quite sure.

Good call.. About time we injected a bit of fingerboard wanking on here! Maybe some of the female contributors could apply the fret oil and referee whether the chords are offside . 8)

BTW No chance of me playing those last two. Mi digits are too short!
Isolate the critisism and pass it on.

Can thi play 'Message In a Bottle'?
Well those bottom first 3 notes of that chord are the same as what Andy Summers plays, try it higher up the neck, its easier.

Fave Guitar?

I seem to have fallen back in love with me Fender Stratocaster after a few years playing mostly a Gibson SG, the reason being quite simply is that for me the Strat has always been the most comfortable of guitars.
This I think is the most important factor in a guitar and the fact they look cool too is a bonus.
As many people have said over the years Leo Fender got it right first time when he created the Strat all those years ago in 1954, It can't really be improved upon.
Only prob with this Strat is I love humbuckers and the single coil bridge pickup is too weedy, I need to get a humbucker put in it or rob a bank and buy one of those lovely HSS Fender Stratocaster Deluxe's.

Yeah I agree Strat is definately mi favourite to play. Love the neck! Don't get on with it live tho'. As you say weedy sound and I always end up knocking the bloody volume/tone pots.
Prefer the look and sound of the Tele. (Don't know why 8) ) Have Seymour Duncans on it and bought a replacement Fender neck for it a few years ago after the truss rod came adrift. What a difference, think the old neck must have been buggered for a while.....

Don't know whether you have this problem but string snapping has always been an issue with me, suffered with it for years, play far too hard and sweat on the saddles all rusted up to fuck......Can only get a couple of gigs out of a set even tho I clean and file the saddles regularly. Toying with investing in some graphite ones, might squeeze an extra gig out of the strings...bit pricey at nearly £30 tho'

No I don't really break strings that much these days even though I hit the strings hard too. I love me bends especially when playing the blues. Im using 11-48 Ernie Ball Power Slinkys on me Fenders and 11-50 Gibson Vintage Reissue strings on me Gibsons, I don't know what gauge you are using but I guess a thicker gauge may help. Yeah youre probably best getting some more bridge saddles, would hate to be breaking strings all the time, I guess that rust wont help too, actually mine are a bit rusty too on me Strat but not enough to cause a lot of string breakage.
Is that £30 per saddle?!
£30 a set sounds quite good though.

Any idea what your neck shape is? on my Strat it's a 'V' shape, over time it has become my fave neck, just feels so right, wish all my guitars had this V neck profile.
Also favour the Maple necks at the moment too (On me Strat & Tele)

Fave FX pedal?

I was given one of these by a drummer sometime in the late 80's, it's and original 70's Electro Harmonix EH4800 Small Stone Phase Shifter, it sounds bloody fantastic, best phaser I have ever heard I tell thi!
