Ham On Rye by Charles Bukouski - An author of gritty realism describing America's low life characters, through the eyes of an alter ego suffering with alcoholic madness. If you've not read any books, short stories or poetry collections from this very talented author before may I suggest: Factotum . Would appreciate any positive feedback/criticism regarding his novels and poetry, anyone else on this fine forum appreciate his body of works?

No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy.

Also a superb film and no book has been better translated to film since The Godfather.

Not a word wasted and good for several re-readings.

Brian Wilson autobiography - Wouldn't it be nice. What a grim read, and I gather he is on the verge of publishing another book saying half the stuff in it is untrue.

The Golden Lion by Wilbur Smith. Good stuff, pretty much the only writer that I'll read who writes about this period (1700s, or thereabouts) and probably because he's one of the first authors I read when I started reading proper grown-up books. Now, his modern stuff (Those in Peril, Vicious Circle) - not so good.

The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher - Hilary Mantel

Short stories. Not quite as satisfying as the title might suggest!

The Silk Roads - a new history of the world by Peter Frankopan

A quite amazing book.
Filled in the vast gaps in my knowledge of history, but more than that, puts the current media hysteria of today into perspective.
£7 for the kindle book is frankly a steal, considering the amount of sweat and toil that must have gone into the 650 pages.

My only disagreement was when he said Baz Warne's was a better guitar player than Hugh Cornwell

Wow Paul what a coincidence- I am reading that too. He is a great chronicler of the period in both print and on TV and I am finding this to be a moving and nightmarish book already and I haven't even reached the war years yet.

Terrifying. Timely. Recommended.

Sam,
I agree.
The research that LR has gone into is extraordinary.
Looking forward to swapping notes when we next see each other.
