Continuing as The Stranglers without Hugh...as they clearly weren't.
They were 3/4 th of the stranglers pre august 1990. Theres no reason they should have done anything else.

I would've just rather they'd come back as something else, like Rage against the machine to name but one, who came back in a new form with a new vocalist after Zack de la Rocha left, they still had their loyal fan base and played RAM tunes but could move on in new directions, untied from the restraints and expectations that remaining as RAM would've tied them to. Hugh wasn't just the guitarist, he was primarily the voice of The Stranglers to me and instantly audibly recognisable.

Their worst move has been keeping the current setlist for so long. Bands aren't so good when they're predictable.

..as an after thought, I think the Duchess video proved a bit of a slip-up..
banned on TOTP just when it needed a push..

(this was before it was watched by 1 man and a cat on B2 sundays..)

Id say once they calmed down in the 80s songs were slipping from the standard set by Rattus

Deffo Tramp not being released and touring without Jet in the mid nineties save his cringeworthy version of Old Codger. A lesson in how to empty an already barely populated hall in one go. After seeing this at Manchester Academy I regard it as the night they hit rock bottom and probably the only time I questioned my support of them.

..................not employing Baz earlier methinks...........Breath of fresh air, attitude, playability, cockiness, wit...............sharpened up a lacklustre JJ too! Even Jet smiles now!

No doubt that it was following Golden Brown with La Folie.....

At that time the band (in hindsight) were as "big" as they were ever going to be...Golden Brown being their most commercial and successful release was then followed by a track that nobody understood and it quite rightly flopped.

Personally i love the track but it never was a single in a million years....

Rubbish!!

I never was a great fan of Pauls, especially when he tried to sing some of the older songs in his own way (my personal opinion),but if they hadn't hired him then they would have given up......I don't think that they would have gone through many if any other auditions to find a singer....
