I also like the ABC in Glasgow and the Carling academy. The carling would be great if you did not have to wait for 3 songs every time you try to get a drink.
I think the best gig I saw with Roberts was the QMU in Glasgow about 5 years ago.Sold out gig and a great atmosphere. They really looked like they were enjoying themselves until someone chucked a pint ( or was it a wet cloth, I cant remember )over Paul.He went ballistic. Most entertaining.
Has to be the Apollo. First time seeing them.
The incident at the QMU. The pint was the second soaking that Paul got that night I think. The first was some scallies with what looked like a binbag of water from the balcony.
The pint incidently came from someone standing at the bar (standing beside my brother-in-law). He claims it was a good throw and had quite a trajectory.
JJ went mental and the roadies (men mountains) came out to escort the villian out of the venue. The band stopped playing until the culprit owned up which took 10 - 15 mins.
I also loved the Carling Academy when the bloke tried to climb down from the balcony.
Oh what fun. There's always a lot of japes at Stranglers gigs.
Punk could be the first step towards Utpoia

It's got to be the Glasgow Apollo. My first Stranglers gig was there and The Stranglers said themselves it was one of their favourite venues to play in.
Why the fuck did they knock it down ? Great place.
We are very excited to be here in A ------me----ri--- ca.

Currently it's The Bitter End P/H in Romford 'cause they have decent beer, punk gigs at least twice a month and it's only a fiver to get in.
Also 'cause it's 10 minutes from my house and I'm a right lazy bastard.
And I like the Steamboat Tavern in Ipswich which is similar except for the distance.
Other favourites include The 100 Club (but not the bar prices) and the Winter Gardens in Blackpool in August.
All time favourite haunt was the old Marquee in Wardour Street. Sadly missed.
So, generally, I prefer small venues.
