I'd say Water, This Song, Something's Gonna, Payday and Moon are quite typical Strangers songs. Down is kind of Harry meets In the end and No man's land is kind of Enough time/ Summat/ Soldiers diary territory. Stallion is quite unique though because there doesn't seem to be keyboards much on that but the production makes up for it! That's got to be one of their best songs ever. Great album.

No maybe it doesn't, but do the songs have to sound stranglersly? if it is a good song in it's own right and even more if you do like the song too isn't it also refreshing to hear something different maybe? that's how i see this album and why i play as many still as i do because they are sounding fresh and different. Not forgeting that their are also plenty of typicasl sounding stranglers songs on this album too if that's what you want to hear with the like's of Water,This Song,No Man's land,If something.I too really like Breathe such a great grower.

Each to their own opinion and yes Giants does have some good tracks on it but overall DM for me is far better, along with the overall production of the album too compared to Giants.

I would be more likely to compare DM with Suite XVI. DM wins hands down, in fact of the last 4 albums for me it goes like this:

1 Dark Matters
2 Suite XVI
3 Norfolk Coast
4 Giants

They are all great albums

I'm sure there must be another thread somewhere, but anyway

The Raven
Rattus Norvegicus
Black and White
No More Heroes
The Gospel According To The Men In Black
La Folie
Dark Matters
Feline
Nosferatu
Norfolk Coast
Giants
Suite XVI
Monster
Aural Sculpture
Dreamtime
Euroman Cometh
10
Fire and Water
Coup de Grace
About Time
Stranglers in the Night
Written in Red

There are other Hugh and JJ releases, but I've only flicked occasionally through them so no real comment on them.

What’s Stranglersly?
The band have constantly evolved and changed, you may get one album that is very similar to it’s predecessor but by the second or third later the sound is quite different. Compare Raven to Rattus, or Feline to Raven, although there are similarities in some tracks, others sound totally different. The best Stranglers albums have that variety, always with tracks that don’t sound like what’s come before.
