Did Daventry really have John Lydon pinned up against the ice cream van?
Did Daventry really have John Lydon pinned up against the ice cream van?
Did this actually happen or has the story become embellished over the years? I mean I can picture JJ doing this seeing as he started this particular rumble in the first place (you all know the story) but Dave!? Needless to say this tale tickles me enormously. Thoughts and comments please.

Dave probably frightened the shit out of him with his menacing voice!

Johnny was probably only about 8st wet thru in those days.
I'll even let you drive my motorbike . . .

Been discussed on here, and other places, before. It may have been Dag Dave.Snowbird wrote: ↑16 Nov 2017, 22:28 Did this actually happen or has the story become embellished over the years? If it was on this date 4.7.76 Roundhouse LondonThe Stranglers supported The Ramones and The Flamin' Groovies at a special American Bi-centennial concert. First ever UK Ramones date,on a Pistol site it said they were at The Black Swan Sheffield on the 4th July 1976,it could have been 5th July when the Ramones played Dingwalls (London, England) but the Stranglers did not support the Ramones and i can't see Dave just going to a Ramones gig? if Dave pinned anybody up it was probable just a skinny punk.

I genuinely did not believe it when I read that it was Dave Greenfield and not Dagenham Dave who had physically threatened Johnny Rotten, I thought it was a misprint and mis-reporting due to memories and accounts getting warped by age etc. It HAD to be Dag Dave, it just had to be! Didn't it??s.harris wrote: ↑20 Nov 2017, 18:29 If it was on this date 4.7.76 Roundhouse LondonThe Stranglers supported The Ramones and The Flamin' Groovies at a special American Bi-centennial concert. Well actually...
For the record I don't know the fact but some more clued-up members of this forum probably do. I just felt a bit embarrassed at my scepticism and dismissal of those reports claiming that it had been Dave Greenfield.
Sorry, this adds nothing to the debate but I feel kind of relieved to have posted it

'Peaches - A Chronicle of The Stranglers from 1974 to 1990', out 2014 on Soundcheck Books.

I'm sure Dave could get a bit lively after a few Stella's!

Funny that I've never heard anyone else other than JJ mention it including the other band members or Simonon, Lydon, Strummer, Jones, nobody?

The incident is described now also in the book I am reading now Tom Bolton: Camden Town
Does not mention Dave though
When you watch the footage of the stranglers convention 1996 where JJ tells this het mentions Dave G. and you see Dave chuckle.
It could be the case Dave is thinking to himself "did I do that? I cannot remember, must cut down the stellas..."
