I think I read somewhere that Hugh gets enough from Stranglers touring to fund his own tours etc. So he has the freedom to kinda play wherever and whenever he wants

I always got the impression Ally is slowed on purpose. There's that deliberate slow build up with the lighthouse effect then Hugh trying to be the Shadows with John Ellis.
