If the Stranglers did a Nirvana cover.....

I'm a member of a home recording forum, and sometimes we do recording challenges. A couple of weeks ago, a challenge was set, to pick a track off Nirvana's "Nevermind" and cover it in a completely different style. I chose "Drain You" and tried to do it in the style of the Stranglers, pre-Raven.

That, my friend, was fucking awesome! Great choice for period of Stranglers used, as l think the lyrics do sound a bit Heroes-y. The singing made me smile, in a good way, l forgot you used to do Shug The music was great too, maybe the keyboard patch could be a bit more Dave-y?

Ha ha, thanks very much! I had to post it here as well, because frankly, all the in-jokes and style cues were completely lost on most of the recording forum guys.It got a good reception though, apart from one lad in Wales, who is both a mate and a Nirvana fan - and I quote:

Jesus's holy bollocks. What an utter fiasco. Sounds like Ian Dury discovered the arpeggiator button on his keyboard and someone described a Nirvana song to him via good translate from Sentinelese.

But he relented later:

Listening to this again this morning (now I've got over my initial horror). Its a fucking masterpiece.

You've even managed to get a few grohlisms into the drums (particularly after the chorus before the 2nd verse).
The bass sound is great - assuming that this is your 70s bass?

This was always one of my favourite tunes off the album, I used to play it in a band in the 90s. Was good fun winding the singer up - I'd play the first chord for him to start singing and then I'd just stop so he'd end up doing the intro acapella.

Dave's piano sound is always difficult to get, especially if you don't want to spend a hundred quid on Hohner keyboard emulations. The basic patch isn't bad, I reckon with the right phaser patch on it it would sound pretty good.
