Cheering for the Wood Block on Always The Sun
I recently saw The Stranglers in Dublin, and a peculiar thing happened. Everytime the drummer hit the wood block during Always the Sun, a large portion of the crowd would cheer "WAAAAAAAY" . This happened maybe... half a dozen times, and JJ seemed to get a good laugh out of it.
Is this a common occurrence during live sets? Like the crowd singing "First, Sheila" during Nuclear Device. Or is this just a once off occurrence?

A leftover from the PR days. Just to cheer him on when hitting the woodblock. Still doing it now seems rather silly but some still do.

I always thought it was "Bruce, Sheila" in Nuclear Device.
I remember doing the wood block cheer when I saw them supporting UB40 after re-signing to EMI. All seated audience in the MEN Arena, then you can start to tell who's here for the Stranglers as we stand up, cheer, then sit down again for this bit.

It is. Because those are very common names in Australia and the song is about AustraliaI always thought it was "Bruce, Sheila" in Nuclear Device.

It's kind of like a bad joke that is funny because it's a predictable bad joke. Or maybe because the action of a guy hitting a little wood block was always made to sound bigger than everything else through the PA
