Level Crossings.
Hi there.
Any fans of level crossings out there ?
I don’t know what it is but since my youth, I have always had a soft spot for level crossings; especially ones which have a signal box next to them or nearby. I don’t know why but they sort of amplify the sense that when you cross them, the track or tracks are rails that take you anywhere and for miles. Level crossings in or near towns do not do as much for me as rural ones. Some people like sitting on a cliff and staring out to sea but for me, and maybe others, a remote level crossing with the odd passing train is a place of peace and serenity.
I still get that sense of excitement when you drive up to one and the red light comes on and the barrier comes down, announcing the imminent arrival of a passing train. I even deliberately slow down on the approach, hoping that the red lights will come on
One of my favourite level crossings from over the years is not far from Welshpool. I checked out a pretty detailed road map and I am sure it crosses the A458 in between Trewern to the north and Buttington to the south. The village of Nelly is slightly south east of the track. It’s a single track crossing and it’s a beauty. There was a cracker somewhere in northern Poland but that was a long time ago.
The one near Welshpool looks slightly like this :
Do you know what I mean ?
Anyway, does anyone else share my perversion ?
Have a good day.

Nice one Nick. You've got the Corfe Castle / Swanage single track near you which is a great journey. It follows the A351 but no level crossings from memory.

Cheers Jez. I obviously overlooked that one.

Level Crossings are wonderful but I absolutely adore Train Tracks (or old Train/Tram Tracks in roads) and especially if you find some hidden somewhere, dunno, but there's always been something magical about them for me.
Leeds used to have Tram cars and it's fun spotting where they once roamed.
Childhood thing I guess, Choo Choo's and all that innit.

Re: Level Crossings.
As a signal man I have several crossings where i work. They can be a pain in the botty at times. With crossing misuse by the public being one huge issue.
I will talk dirty to you now Paul, I have 2 CCTV xings 2 AHBC's and numerous Occupation/accomodation xings and even an open xing in my area. Was that good for you!?

I intend to locally monitor a plethora of automatic open crossings this very day...being off to work over the East Suffolk Line in a minute, like what I am.
