Should children be allowed to drink wine.

Should children be allowed to drink wine.
I was recently invited around a French colleagues house for dinner. During the meal, his children said, can we please have some wine daddy. They are aged 4 and 6. He then proceeded to pour them each a half glass of red wine which had been watered down. The kids seem to enjoy it with their dinner. Whats your thoughts????

Always gave my daughter a taste, since she was tiny.
I think it teaches moderation, and it's not such a big issue when they are older.
Doesn't seem to have caused any problems....

I think it depends largely on how responsible/sober the person serving the wine is.
My children were given watered down wine to taste but didn't like it and therefore stopped asking for it.

Sounds very much like the French way of doing it. Introduce kids to alcohol at a young age and it doesn't become the rebellious thing to do as they grow into teenagers. Dunno if it would work wholesale into British culture though - it seems to have been 'drink as much as you can, as quick as you can' in the UK for years now!

I give my kids some wine a sip with our meal and they ask for a drink ,shame we can't be more continental and encourage families out more.
The current mind set won't allow it,a lot of people have given up going out in the centre of Lincoln as it's full of drunken fools.
Suppose every town is booze britain in some way.

I have often encouraged children to taste whatever I am drinking but I usually find they don't care for it.
Besides which I've been banned from the park now.

I tried to make him laugh, He didn't get the joke, and then he said I wasn't right in the head.

to be fair though 4 and 6 is maybe a bit too young for me to be comfortable with that.mine don't seem that bothered (11 and 13) so won't be shoving down their throats but wouldn't deny them a tasteravenlunatic wrote:I have often encouraged children to taste whatever I am drinking but I usually find they don't care for it.
