Serge Gainsbourg

Post by Arthur Streeb-Greebling »

Any fans of the man here?
I always loved 'Je T'aime Moi Non Plus' when I was a kid but I never bought any of Gainsbourg's music until a couple of years a go and now I just can't stop listening to the guy, his music is truly wonderful and I guess his best work would probably be the ''Histoire de Melody Nelson' album. Great music, lovely funky drums with that great sounding '60's style muted bass sound and lots of orchestration & brass and good old Serge singing over the top.

Im sure JJ is a huge fan (I think he's talked about him a few times) and the more I listen to Serge I can hear his influence more and more on JJ.
There is one track in particular called 'Harley Davidson' (Serge singing with Brigitte Bardot) which starts off with just a rumbling bass and straight away you think.... JJ!

He's a very interesting songwriter, got a couple of old lps i bought on hols in France. The JJ influence is certainly there indeed. A bit more mainstream is Jacques Dutronc , also a fave of JJ.

Best Gainsbourg moment is when he at some French talkshow spoke the immortal words to a then young and not junkie Witney Houston "I wanzz to fok you"... Caused quite a stir at the time...

I like that song with the porno style female "yeurgh ehhah"s in it - like she's being whipped.... what's that one called?
If Dave was to use a Hammond L100 for just one more gig I'd die content.

'Je T'aime Moi Non Plus' as the streeb said. A bit of a remix later - and suddenly it turned into La Folie! Great stuff.

Arthur,

I agree with you. Serge - the man is a God !! It is brilliant music and singing.

In a very similar vein, I strongly recommend an album called, "The Girl from Ipanema : Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook". It is wonderful stuff which you can sit through and listen to for hours and before you know it, you've got through three bottles of house red. I know the album is on Amazon. Do a seach under Jobim.

Enjoy !

This guy keeps getting recommended to me. The last time it was, "If you like Nick Cave..." and the time before that I think it was, "If you like Air..." I really must track down some of his stuff... Reckon the album mentioned above was the one last recommended to me.

Mercury/Philips did a compilation set...only in france but you can get them off Amazon and eBay, 4 cds, each one with a different theme.
Couleur Cafe, which is a collection of his Latin influenced stuff
Du Jazz dans ravins which is jazz influenced
Classe X which is 20 of his "X rated" songs about sex
and the best and most accessable which is Comic Strip, a collection of his 60s/70s pop songs including Bonnie & Clyde, Initials BB, Bloody Jack, Les Sucettes and Je t'aime...moi non plus. If you want to get into Gainsbourg, this is the album for you. Theres hundreds of compilations out there but this brings together most of his "POP" songs. It's surprising how many you will recognise. And then you can start on his back catalogue and find some of his more obscure stuff ,some of which is very Caveish.
