"I said, We can take a year off, we'll stop, it doesn't have to be like that. But he
was adamant, he wanted a clean break".
John Fogerty (the voice of CCR)
Sound familiar? It sure as fuck does to me.
Reading that this morning in a CCR piece in an old rock mag reminded me of the
obvious Strangs connection. And then, on reflection, pretty much every rock bio
or feature I ever read ever. All of them, every band, it's always, "Yeah,
looking back now, we should have just taken a year off after...(X)... happened."
Is there a band that has went for the "year off" option?
Lets, like, just take a year off?

It's all of those artistic temperaments and strong egos that cause bands to make rash decisions that they can't back down from. At least the stranglers aren't suing each other like the new order lot.
I suspect that the rolling stones have been close to splitting up - I get the impression that they all have problems with each other, but they have the sense to take a break and come back together when it suits everyone. Doesn't necessarily lead to a bands best work though.

Manics did the year off thing about 5 years back. In reality they did end up playing some festivals but on the whole they did it. I reckon they'd have split if they didn't.

That must be one of the exceptions to the rule.theraven1979 wrote: ↑21 Aug 2018, 22:51 Manics did the year off thing about 5 years back. In reality they did end up playing some festivals but on the whole they did it. I reckon they'd have split if they didn't.

What about yer Radioheads an that, do they just all fuck off away from each other for a year or so?
Speaking Manics, right away I'm thinking Joy Div/Curtis- after IC copped it the band pretty much plowed on.
And though it did help New Order get to where they eventually got to, even before the tragedy of Curtis' suicide
that chance for a wee break was there to be took. Now they're another band with, We should have taken a year off
stories to tell.

Re: Lets, like, just take a year off?
I guess it depends on the band's financial position to be able to take a full year off?
Re: Lets, like, just take a year off?
Good point. The likes of U2, Radiohead and Coldplay will be spending extended periods not writing, recording or touring because they can afford it. The majority of bands need to keep working to pay the bills, they won't have the luxury of taking a year off.

Yeah, I reckon that's always been the case. Again, so many stories
of bands needing a break due to whatever, and getting pushed by
management/record company whatever to keep going, keep touring,
keep releasing sellable product. Especially when it's considered "hot".
