shocking, but also surprised he was only 60. Last saw The Fall play 8-9 years ago & remember thinking he didn't look too well then and the way he shuffled around the stage I would never have guessed he was only 50ish..

Perhaps there was some illness...
What a shame a truly unique guy.

Yes, seen interviews and he hasn't looked well for a long time , couldn't understand a lot of what he said . Unique band and bloke , sometimes brilliant , sometimes awful . Music will be a duller place without him .I quite liked The Fall .

Well possibly the greatest lyricist of all time? A unique talent, used to stay up late when younger to record "The Fall" sessions on John Peel, just such

sad news.R.I.P Mr Smith.Fav song has to be "Hip Priest" but so many.

A very different band , don't think there has been anything remotely close at any time to them . Did some great songs but at the same time some quite awful stuff - I think really you had to get it , if you didn't then you wouldn't like them . Mark E Smith wasn't someone who'd compromise one little bit .
I wonder how many people had at one stage or another been in The Fall , most he would have fallen out with at some stage . Can't think of any front man who delivered like Mark Smith ( won't call him a singer as he didn't sing ) . Bloody hell , people have said JJ was awkward - imagine these two in the same band - he would have driven JJ mad I think .

He would have just sacked JJ anyway...

Once read an interview with him where he said about The Fall " we've never split up, well I haven't anyway"

Very sad news - The Fall have always been in my top 5 bands - hard to compare to any other group. MES was of course poorly for some time already, still a big shock when I heard this sad news.

For what it's worth, a personal fave here :
