SQUEEZE & JOHN COOPER CLARKE TOUR 2015

Post by ThruBeingCool »

Anyone arsed about this?

I went to see them at The Royal Concert Hall in Nottingham last night. 2500 capacity and a sell out.

First up. Dr John Cooper Clarke. He performed a very entertaining set for an hour, half poetry and half stand up comedy. He was quite simply brilliant and almost worth the extortionate ticket price alone if you had to pay. Better than any stand up comedian I've seen on the telly lately, he is a legend. Merchandise had some nice 'Ramones' style JCC t-shirts on sale but by the time I decided to purchase they had run out of 'fat dwarf' ' size. Never mind.

Onto the main act - it's Squeeze!

Saw them for the first time a few years ago just out of interest as I was never a huge fan back in the day. However, I was really impressed so I decided a revisit was in order. I was half expecting another greatest hits type of set list and this is kind of half of what I got. If you aren't aware then Squeeze have a new album out - 'Cradle To The Grave' which is linked to the excellent TV series of the same name starring Peter Kay. I bought the album a week or so ago and I must say it is very good indeed.

So, the set couldn't have been much better imho. Basically a mix of the new album and old favourites. Apart from Chris Difford and Glen Tilbrook I think the rest of the band were newbies. A different line up from 4/5 years ago methinks. I could be wrong.
Anyhow, much of the old stuff was reworked and given a different twist which, ya know? I found kind of refreshing. Probably keeps things more interesting for the band and let's face it, what's the point in going out live and playing all your songs note for note, same as your records?

As Squeeze played their final song, they left the stage, walked down the front of the all seater venue (still with instruments) and headed straight for a merchandise stall to flog CDs of the gig which had just been recorded. How cool is that?

Cool for cats.

'Hour Glass' kicked off the set. Also included in no particular order;

Tempted
Another Nail In My Heart
Black Coffe In Bed
Goodbye Girl
Cool For Cats
Up The Junction
Goodbye Girl
Labelled With Love
Slap 'n' Tickle
Take Me I'm Yours
Is That Love?
Pulling Muscles From A Shell

Plus most songs from the new album.

No doubt I've missed a few out. All said and done a great set and show. With JCC as support it was a top nights entertainment.

Not Sqeeze or JCC related but... Who else thinks ThruBeingCool's Devo hat icon looks better in the original blue version as opposed to the current red?

You're not the first to say that actually. Maybe I should revert to blue......?

I was listening to an old Squeeze song called "It's So Dirty" recently. I think they are underrated as musicians.
