Blur - The Magic Whip

Post by jonimac »

I must say I'm really enjoying the new Blur album. A wide variety of songs, with plenty of interesting sounds. Proves how much Blur needed Graham Coxon back. A unique guitarist, who adds his magic to each song.
And I would swear that they've sampled the bubbling synth start of "Just Like Nothing On Earth" for a brief little 3 second snatch in the intro of "Go Out", around the 30 second mark.
Or I've just listened to the Stranglers for far too long !

Is the album better than '13', do you think? (If you liked 13, if you think it's poop then it's a pointless ask :P)
Think I'll go for a stroll in the trees.

I'm enjoying the album too. I was thinking there are some similarities to The Stranglers in that they can do commercial "pop" songs and can also do the avant garde nicely.
Good album

Bob

I'd say it's a hybrid of The Great Escape, 13 and Gorillaz.
Albarn's voice is better too - more mellow, less mockney .

I think there were some rumours that he may have, ahem, "helped" with the Elastica album. Waking Up perhaps?

Blur have never made a great album (in my opinion) but every now and then they win me over. There was an acoustic version of Tender they did recently on a US chat show that was really good. I agree his singing is getting better too.

Haven't heard the new one yet but glad they are back. A band who did something different on each album apart from becoming victims of their own success a bit in the mid 90s. They started off being marketed as a northern madchester type act something they hated as they were Essex Boys, and their second album was really their first proper one so to speak. I never was overkeen on the parklife/Great escape era and all that battle of the band britpop nonsense with Oasis, those albums were pretty throwaway although contained a few gems. The self titled 1997 album and 1999's 13 are the best work for me not full of crowd pleasing pop singles. The album they mad without Coxon was ok in parts but it he was missed for that one. I can see some similarities with the stranglers some of the keyboard riffs here and there and certain guitar bits remind of the MIB. There is one track on 13 which is very meninblack called B.L.U.R.E.M.I sounds like Two sunspots crossed with Just like nothing on earth with the voice distortion.
