XTC... Science Friction.

Post by Burn e 77 »

Always liked XTC, plus their psychedelic alter ego's Dukes Of Stratosphear... the first 'New Wave' single I ever bought in 1977 was a 12" copy of their '3D EP'
Science Friction was a top tune then (still is, in my opinion) and their album "Drums and Wires" combined many styles including Pop, Punk, New Wave & Dub...
The 7" single given away free with this LP included psychedelic influences all mashed up with truly manic keyboards / piano (as did the LP as a whole)
a classic album IMHO at the time (1979)... and still to this day.

Anyone share a taste for "XTC/Dukes Of Stratosphear"
Science Friction, Statue Of Liberty, This Is Pop, Living Through Another Cuba, Sgt Rock or 25 o.Clock ???

Really top band, been getting into them quite a lot over the last few months. Moulding and Partridge are both brilliant song writers and musicians in their own right. I prefer the 80's stuff, particularly Drums and Wires (I know that was 79), English Settlement and later on Wasp Star, but you can't go too far wrong with any of it. I remember Steve Fishman telling me he was a big fan of the band and Mouldings bass playing
Shove it up yer bollocks then!

Not massively keen on their really early stuff but yeah Mummer/Big Express and onwards - Wasp Star, Apple Venus both fantastic - gutted that they called it a day after them.

Life Begins At the Hop was one of my first 'new wave' singles having heard Peel play it. It's about as new wave as Dire Straits' Sultans of Swing but that never stopped me loving it. A great band who not unlike the MIB I reckon have never been easy to categorise.
Think I'll go for a stroll in the trees.

I'm a complete obsessive. All the releases, solo work, guest appearances with other bands, cover versions...

(Bit like my obsession with The Stranglers actually. :) )

Drums & Wires was/is a great album, really got into this at the time and still listen to it occasionally today.

I don't really know any of their other material though, apart from the odd single release, so if anybody has recommendations for other XTC albums I would give them a try, cheers

I'm in the minority I think but I bloody love the Mummer album. EVERY album has at least one classic XTC track on it though.
