Stiv Bators

Post by Rodney Blackstaff »

Sometimes following the Stranglers, throws up something unexpected!!!

During the 80's they appeared on a compilation album called 'New Underground' which featured amongst others a band called the "Lords Of The New Church" I was love at first hearing, when I heard the two tracks on the album. Turns out they were some kind of so called early Punk Super-Group consisting of Brian James (The Damned), Dave Tregunna (Sham 69) and Nicky Turner (The Barracudas) and one Stiv Bators (The Dead Boys).

Stiv was a character to say the least, and subsequent delvings, introduced me to the works of The Dead Boys and the short lived interim band called "The Wanderers", which then led into LOTNC.

This link is to Stivs last recordings before his death in 1990 and if you click on the title above the picture on the page, it takes you to the download link

Some might find these recordings of interest

I have bought all Stiv Bators recordings, also the Last Race CD which was released in 1996 or 1997. The track "Poison Heart" was also released by The Ramones as a single. Steve was a very nice bloke and wrote some great music with the Dead Boys and the Lords of the New Church. Quite a long time since then but still worth listening to from time to time. :smt035

Had an amazing three night run in April 1987.

Saw the Dead Boys at the Ritz in NY which I believe might've been there last live show.

The previous two nights, same venue, were the last two times I saw the Stranglers with Hugh.

Great thread Rodney,

I personally think that Stiv is THE best frontman of all..

Even though i have only seen the Dead Boys on dvd, i saw him live
with the Lords on many occasions, once with The Wanderers and solo once.

On record, his energy didn't always come across but live - superb.

As well as all of the Dead Boys releases, most of the Lords stuff is excellent.
His solo releases are quite different - very 60's Phil Spector style - but again
they are all superb. I particularly love the track "The Last Year".

A real tragedy that his death was so avoidable.

Check out his solo releases and the first Dead Boys lp.

Amazing frontman.

Good call, saw LOTNC on a few occasions and you always got your monies worth with Stiv and the band, got nothing on cd but a couple of albums on vinyl, plus the band name has to be one of my favs.
