THE DAY (PUNK) MUSIC DIED......

Post by MULLY »

So it's fast approaching the end of the 40 Years Of Punk 'celebrations' (somewhat ironically) climaxing with Joe Corre's bonfire of the vanities - but surely Punks not dead?

Great stuff Mully.
I don't think Punk can die anymore than Classical, Jazz, Rock'n'Roll, Reggae or Soul, etc. can ever die.
It may have hibernated for a few years but it came back like they all do.
Now there are as many Punk bands playing live as there ever were.
It may be considered dead or purely nostalgia by mainstream media but I've never really gone with what mainstream media is telling me is 'hip'.

It's not dead, it's just different.

Thing is with "punk", everyone has their own interpretation of it. Some think it's about fashion, others music and for the likes of me it's probably more about attitude. Not that I've personally got any punk attitude.

i actually question that there is such a thing as punk rock at all. Innit all just rock 'n' roll at the end of the day? It's all just media invention, attaching labels to a musical genre. Hear me out.....

I've read interviews in the past where The Pistols have kind of denied that they were punk rockers and that "punk" was just a term that the music press generated to group a few bands and their fans together for convenience sake. Still, I think the Sex Pistols were a punk band.

The Stranglers have always said (well, most of them) that they weren't a punk band. To me, they were the biggest punk band but they just can't see it.

Now, the bands that bought into the hype and actually call theirselves "punk bands" , they're the ones I'm sceptical about. The real punks are the ones that don't know they're punks.

Hope I've cleared the matter up.

"Punks not dead!" How could it ever be? The Exploited and their ilk unwittingly tried to kill it but you can't murder something that didn't exist in the first place.

This is pop? Yeah yeah yeah!
