I think he understood that Ireland and the uk didnt want to have Northern Ireland.
He might of belived in home rule but being a fan of the IRA i just dont think he was.

No he wasn't.
He believed at one point that Britain should withdraw from Northern Ireland as he seen the situation as an Irish problem. He softened this approach over the last 20 years. I happen to think he was wrong on many things including Northern Ireland, but I admired him for his honesty, principles and oration. You sully the name of Tony Benn rather cheaply - he was a man who served his country in the RAF and wished to see more equality, peace and social justice in the UK. Why would anyone oppose those principles?
