I think you have to compare bands when they were at their peak. The first four albums were untouchable. From then on, yes, some bands have equaled or even bettered them..

A lot of bands that seem to get masses of attention haven't produced the same quality of album material as what the Stranglers have done. I do like the Stone Roses a lot, but they only have one great album, same really with Specials.

Back in the 70's a few bands might have been close for me as being as good as The Stranglers - Elvis Costello , The Skids, Cockney Rejects , UK Subs , Hawkwind ... but they all either disapperaed or the interest waned ...whereas over time my interest has always been maintained with The Stranglers so I can't say I ever liked a band more or considered over time and consistency a band being better . Sometimes a band might do someting better than the Stranglers did at that time ( ie The Blood around Aural time I guess , Killing Joke at Giants time) - but overall no one KJ apart - POSSIBLY- has for me matched The Stranglers .
There have been albums by MIB I haven't liked much - in comparrison to the rest of their material but it doesn't always make those albums bad - just not as good as the rest - maybe exceptions being 10 and Giants which I do find pretty dire , even WIR is quite acceptable these days . Some bands could match Stranglers at one given time but not over the whole 40 years IMO . The only band over the whole time I could possibly entertain as being nearly as good are Killing Joke - currently I'd say better at this moment in time - overall maybe Joke lag a bit behind and some of their earlier albums are far inferior to The Stranglers at the same time .
