Live vs Studio recordings

Post by Ravenette »

Is it just me? As much as I like going to gigs, and not just the Stranglers and hearing them live, I much prefer to hear and buy a 'polished' studio album that I do a live album complete with 'intentional' fuck ups... possible discussion...

Good question...
In general yes, prefer the studio treatment over recorded live performances.

But I need to give it more thought...

For example some bands recorded output doesn't stand up to their live performances and vice versa...
Thank you very much

It depends on the recording doesn't it. For example I prefer the version of Money on the Live 5 album to the About time version. And Coupe de Grace live in Poland sounds far better than the studio version. Generally though I prefer the album versions. A lot of the live tracks don't sound half as good on cd as they do at the gig.

Love the raw sound of 'Live X Certs' ... 'All Live' not bad, but hate the new stuff....switch off after awhile.

Live X Cert
All Live
5 Live 01
Hammersmith (BBC)

All cracking CD's and are perfect accounts of The Stranglers as they went along.

The other live stuff, to me, was just 2nd hand bootlegged shite really. My cat could have done better on those recordings!!!

Live albums are a bit like holiday snaps - a reminder of a great experience yet always slightly disappointing.

I do like some of the live stuff, Live X cert is really good and I'm quite keen on All live however its a bit quiet though. Access All areas is very poor I think.

Live albums all the time. Love them.

Live music all the way for me. the official live output of this band is very poor... hence my interest in bootlegs. But there's nothing better than hearing a great version of a song, nailed and delivered as it should be. In Person.

Yep totally agree there ...but it is wierd how certain bands only come across well in the live context ...almost as if they can't achieve that adrenaline in the studio ...luckily the strange can do both ...
