Just been awarded a grant to get a Wheelchair Racer

Post by Hammersmith1982 »

Happy Fucking Christmas. I never expected this to happen, but I was awarded a grant by the Bank Workers Charity to get this bike. Apparently I inspired the staff so much that they decided to help me out

I can't wait. I get a cheque next week, then go to Bristol for a fitting and then it's built around me. (I'm gonna have to be careful over Christmas then)

I pick it up mid Feb.

Hi Toiler, it wasn't people I work with, as I'm self employed, but the people at the Grants Department of the Bank Workers Charity. When I started speaking to them ages ago, I was telling them about getting disabled people involved in our local Wheelchair Basketball Club and sending them leaflets, posters etc and asking them if they would be interested in bringing a team down for a Staff Inspiration Day. Telling them that they could use it as a fun team building exercise. Well it's got to be better than some of the old crappy days out Team Building Days.

Anyway, I then said to them that I used to be a mad cyclist and wanted to get back to it, but there was nowhere to hire an old buggers, properly adapted bike, to which the woman kept asking me details about, and I thought it a bit strange, but carried on. Then I said my goodbyes and got a phone call a couple of days later from the same woman who said that they all loved my enthusiasm and why don't I apply for a grant?

I ummed and agghhhddd with the idea, but to be honest paperwork is not my strong point and she said "The charity will do the correct paperwork, if I provide the proof" So, 5 days later it was all done and sent off to the Board who approved it within 2 minutes flat, as they had all the correct paperwork!!!

Fuck a duck, is all I can say. I never even thought about applying or being able to afford one as it is, so this is gonna be heavenly.

They've also contacted an Athletics Club in Hampshire and have got me a trial session and training session at the end of next week. So, I can see what I need to do, for the chair adaptations and to get me back on my feet.

Plus a cycle club have contacted me via them and told me that they would be more than happy to do a specially designed route for me so that I can have a go with them, where there are not many inclines.

I was starting to go on a bit of a downer the last few weeks, as the pains of the cold dig deep inside the old wounds, but now, even though I've still got them, I'll have a good excuse for fucked legs, and mentally that will make me so much stronger.

I can now train with my daughter who is doing London to Paris next year with Pompey Uni and my 14 year old son who I've never been able to cycle with, but soon it will all change for the good.

God, I'm rambling again!!! Apologies

PS Toiler - I will send you a piccie of the racer with the stickers on. :smt023 :smt023 :smt023 :smt026 :smt026

Thanks, just need to get myself super fit now. Just went out and had a trail on the Seafront with another adaptation and got up to 34 mph. No one was around and the wind was behind me. Fnarr Fnarrr
