You can ride a 50cc no probs, the 125 you need to pass the first part of a CBT (about £90) and you can use L plates for 2 years if you don't do the 2nd part, then have to re=do part 1 again.

Thinking of the same myself, looking for a Vespa 125 or maybe the new LML Vespa clones ...... it'll be awhile yet tho :x

My understanding is that you do not have to do the theory test if you do the CBT (in order to ride a 125cc).

The CBT course involves five elements:

A. introduction

B. practical on-site training

C. practical on-site riding

D. practical on-road training

E. practical on-road riding

The five elements have to be completed in sequence, although the order of the exercises within the element can be varied. You will only move on to the next element when your instructor is satisfied you have learnt the necessary theory and demonstrated the practical skills to a safe basic level.

Hi - I was only referring to doing the CBT itself. But of course and as you say, for the full licence, it's theory and CBT.

I had my 50cc derestricted Nick and it did add a bit more umpf to the ride. Probably got an 5mph out of it.

It was deresticted at a Vespa dealership but I think the process is illegal. The did offer to do it though :? and I duly accepted.

Great fun as they are, just be careful on the damn thing.

cbt's are easy, although i think theyve brought this new thing in where you have to drive at 50 mph whilst swerving really fast ?

in theory you could drive a 200cc scoot with your provisional which has been converted from a 125 as long as it still has 125 on the log book, thats legal.

homer dont get an LML.

get one soon phil, then we can go bombing about lol.

To be honest, I would never ride a moped. However, from a financial point of view, I can see the attraction, cheap to run and easy to ride. However, far less power. I have seen the way HGV's drive too close to mopeds and they do not take a dominante road postion because they are under powered. However, with a motorcycle, you have the power and take the road position. If you are considering any kind of motorised two wheel transport, then read Motorcycle Road Craft and perhaps undertake a Police 'bike sake' course for the day.
