As one who works at the sharp end of the Oil & Gas Industry, I can explain in simple terms what's going on!
THEY'RE TAKING THE PISS
Hopefully I'll be getting another bumper wage rise this year . NOT

Georgie, try £75 for a tank in my Galaxy (which will take it 300 miles at best), my tyres are dying of old age, not wear.
Fancy a swap? It's a lovely motor.
Aircraft petrol is currently £1.59 a litre at my local club, I know it is 100 octane but it has no 'road tax' on it.
Unsustainable.

Are these the devil, are they four (again)?
Look at it another way.... when oil was $15/b not long ago, your petrol wasn't 90% cheaper was it? retailers really were taking the piss then!
Most of the price of petrol in this country is made up of tax and duty. The wholesale price of oil is only a fraction of the cost.
And in reality the price of petrol is falling relative to the price of crude.
Another reason all things are going up is because oil is traded in dollars still... which makes it cost more.
I say this coming from the thick end of the oil indutsry! (my day job...)

My local paper this week has a lead story about a bloke who is now in hospital suffering from serious burns having destoyed his shed in a fireball while attempting to make Diesel from chip fat and "other chemicals".
Gelignite presumeably.
Its about the same in France now but a fair bit cheaper in Spain still. £80 odd quid to fill my Galaxy up, and just driven 2400 miles at 25mpg
Still, its very comfortable, and the frequent fuel stops allow you to stretch the legs.
In fact my legs are now about 8 foot long

I tried to make him laugh, He didn't get the joke, and then he said I wasn't right in the head.
