Interesting answer to question 32 about 'Thrown Away'. Always thought that the problem with The Stranglers for the 3 albums after 'The Raven' was the poor production. The band tried to do it themselves and it didn't always work. As Hugh remarked in 'Song By Song' they didn't really need one for the first couple of albums as they had played most of the material for a number of months/years on the road, so most songs had been refined. By the time they had to write albums to order they needed a producer to help them with the development of the new songs (as they didn't get the same opportunity as before to refine them on the road). Had 'Thrown Away' been written in 1976 that song by the time it reached the recording phase in the studio would have been a totally different sounding song. Likewise had they had a decent producer in the studio he/she may have improved it by giving them the benefit of their experience. Just a thought. 8)
Hugh - "We had gangs of skinheads coming along trying to cause problems and stuff"
Rick Wakeman - "How did you deal with it?"
Hugh - "Our bass player used to jump off the stage and beat the shit out of them!"
