I'll do you a top 5:
1. Valley of the Birds
2. In Heaven She Walks
3. In A While
4. Daddy's Riding The Range (I don't know why it gets so much stick, I quite like it)
5. Here

Wonderful Land is ok too. I used to hate Joy de Viva with a passion, but even that is growing on me now arrrghh. Miss You is still shit though.

The recent discussion over in the MKIV forum got me to dig it out and listen to it for the first time in years - usually, when I listen to The Stranglers, it's almost always an original line-up album that I listen to. Personally, I mostly enjoyed hearing Written In Red this time around, although I can't shake the feeling that the album takes a massive nosedive after 'Joy de Viva', which I've always quite liked.

I agree that 'Miss You' in particular is a heap of shit.

One thing that did strike me on this go-round is wondering where the "lack of bass" criticisms come from... JJ's playing on 'Daddy's Riding The Range' isn't too far from 'Toulouse', and 'Wonderful Land' has some great bass playing, even though the song isn't much cop. If they mean the bass isn't loud, then, y'know, it wasn't loud on Dreamtime either.

In a While is a great tune, head and shoulders above anything else on there IMHO. So no prizes for guessing where its one vote came from.

wasn't this album produced with the band not recording it collectively? I'm sure I read that most of the time they weren't even in the studio together I think the first 3 songs are fine the rest I can never get in to

Best song on Written In Red... A contradiction in terms, surely.

There's definitely songs on there Bernie, I heard someone singing words to a melody. I hope it wasn't just in my head. arghhh.

There are songs, melodies & tunes on there as you say "parasiteinblack"... I appreciate all music & art and the musicians who produce it. For me though it doesn't cut the mustard, but that's just me... and I have no right to complain as I haven't been in the Stranglers as a creative member

Can't comment - never heard the album. But from what I can gather from some people, that's probably a good thing...

I dimly recall reading that they ran out of coin while recording "Daddy's.." Worked much better on FRI 13th.

Agreed, though Valley of the Birds runs it close. Paul was an extremely underrated lyricist during his time with the band, and I definitely think he's missed in that respect.

I like the first 4 tracks plus Here and Joy. The rest is weak.
