Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
I’m sure he did, and so he should. But that’s not what I said. It’s that he plasters his promotional media heavily with his past involvement, which is different to playing the songs (and which I have no issue with). It’s a shame he has to do this as his solo output should stand on its own without i...

Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
The messiah pose is an attempt to 'have a thing' - like dave drinking a pint or JJ kicking. Baz has said in the past he believes hes a better guitarist than hugh, which may have inspired the initial pose, but i think he just thinks everyone is waiting for it now.

Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
I like that someone has written on setlist.com 'first time since x' underneath some of the tunes, ive never seen that before.
Theres obviously been an argument somewhere about how rarely played some of the tracks are.

Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
Thanks, i think that was, by far, the biggest curve ball in the set.

Re: JJ in Classic Rock
Its normal to big up the most current work, though. Ok, saying its close to genius is a tad over the top, but what would be the point of making new stuff if he didnt think it was worthwhile.

Re: Strangler in the light
I think most of the animosity is contrived. I dont believe JJ thinks about hugh that much.
But he has to 'win', so has to tell everyone that him playing 80% mk 1 is winning, and hugh playing lots of solo material is losing.

Re: Strangler in the light
The best 'fuck you' both could give to each other would be to only play a mk1 songs in the encores. Prove that they didnt need the other to make music and money. Interviewers wouldnt keep talking about 1978 and they wouldnt have to talk about each other. There might have been opportunities for them ...

Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
I dont think Hugh had Paul Weller level planning around leaving the stranglers. Its a good point about JJ being able to write the narrative about what went on - Hugh was planning a solo career and wanted american success, so ditched the band. But by all accounts the making of 10 was difficult, jj an...

Re: Strangler in the light
I bet all four orginals were nightmares to work with. I think creating orginal work and being difficult go hand in hand. The band is probably less fraught now simple because JJ is in charge rather than just one of the band. Years ago he could only refuse to be involved with tracks he disnt like (gol...

Re: 50th Anniversary Setlist?
Exactly. What it is, is two members of the original line up playing music from the original period alongside music composed after that. One has the legal, commercial rights and brand of that original material including the band name, the other uses his past involvement and the logo style of the ori...

Re: Q mag - JJ Burnel - interview
We're three articles away from JJ claiming to have written golden brown and insisting it being released against the wishes of the other stranglers.
Good to see jj in Q, though. I think there'll be lots of positive press this year.
