Re: The Jam some good songs but rather boring imho
Set The House Ablaze is a superb track and the best on Sound Affects imo. It is their epic track, of course the Stranglers did it regularly on every album and that is another thing that sets them apart from everyone else.. I agree - up there with Funeral Pyre as one of the most intense things they ...

Re: The Jam some good songs but rather boring imho
Y'see, I don't agree that The Jam were "samey" at all. "In the City" does not sound like "Precious", "Scrape Away" does not sound like "Going Underground", "The Bitterest Pill" doesn't sound like "Set the House Ablaze" etc. I get ...

Re: The Jam some good songs but rather boring imho
From the "In the City" single up to the "Beat Surrender" single (their entire lifespan, basically) The Jam barely put a foot wrong. The Direction Reaction Creation box set from the '90s featuring pretty much everything they ever released is great value for money, and like it or n...

Re: Who is britians best ever punk band!
I've heard so many different reasons for what the point of punk was/is that it pretty much renders any debate over what was/is "punk" pointless.

Re: Possible band re-unions you'd like to see
Can't think of many that I'd like to see that haven't already reformed at some point or that have all of the members still with us, and it's far too late for some of them. A John Foxx-era Ultravox reformation would not be any good (they're far too old to play things Fear in the Western World or Youn...

Re: Who is britians best ever punk band!
Who cares? The way that I see it is that 1976-1982 was a very fertile period in Britain for great new music, and that there was a surplus of great stuff going on to counteract the shit that was being made. Debates about which bands were/were not "punk" remain comfortably a zillion times mo...

Re: Damned Original Reunion on the cards?
It's going to be interesting to see what the overall outcome of this is as there's always still the chance that it may not even happen as scheduled, but while "New Rose" is undoubtedly a timeless classic and the first couple of Damned albums have their moments, I see the early Brian James ...

Re: The Who possibly greatest live band ever at their peak?
I'd say The Who's live peak would have been 1969-1971... basically the era encompassing Woodstock, Live at Leeds, Who's Next etc., although Quadrophenia is my favourite album of theirs. Keith Moon was a great drummer when he was on form, but was capable of some terrible playing.

Which of course is post Richie (Richey) Manics  Jim Seeking The Room With The Three Windows, Without Knowing The End and The Last Song are good...the rest is ernest dad rock like the latter-day Manics have churned out for years...but if you like post Richie Manics you'll disagree. Nothing on t...
