As you were.

Both unusual albums, two of my faves.

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

Rattus, The Raven, Black and White all sound quite fresh compared to the last 3 Mark I albums. All Stranglers MKI albums sound like they were recorded and released in the period in which they were recorded and released and are a document of the way the band were at that time. That's part of the poi...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

Apart from North Winds and Souls it all sounds so dated. Nothing wrong with being of its time, but the best Stranglers albums sound timeless. "Dated" is not a pejorative, and there's no such thing as timelessness. An album released in 1984 sounds like an album recorded in 1983/1984? What ...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

I'd take A.S B-Sides over anything on DM [emoji1787] Jim Sent from my Pixel 4a using Tapatalk Some great songs on AS, but a few that I never warmed to. Laughing, Punch and Judy, Uptown and of course Mad Hatter. Apart from North Winds and Souls it all sounds so dated. Nothing wrong with being of its...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

Let Me Down Easy minus the faux soul backing vocals and the tin machine drums would be good enough to fit onto Dark Matters. Maybe one for the band to try live. Always enjoyed that track, should have been a proper hit. Can't help but feel that you're looking at this the wrong way 'round. If "L...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

Certainly Jim's drums are heavier on this album and more energetic than previous Stranglers albums. It is the absence of proper drums with the replacement of drum machines that give the later MK 1 albums that awful tinny effect. I'd describe Jim's drumming as quite lumpen, particularly in compariso...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

Would you say it "sounds like The Stranglers" though? I guess the trademark bass is there in parts. Vocals and drumming are of course different. Dave keys got watered down IMO (and according to others). You're left with a very distilled version of The Stranglers at best. Maybe another que...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

On the other hand, I still listen to Monster regularly (the most recent time being this morning, in fact) in spite of the album being roughly three years old at this point, whereas I still haven't felt the need to listen to Dark Matters since day of release. I've noticed the wording was "sound...

Re: Two in Éire, one in Northern Ireland

Excellent. Should be a great night in the Limelight in Belfast Really surprised they've only been offered the Limelight considering the last three Befast Stranglers gigs have seen them seen sell out the Ulster Hall twice and the Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival Marque (a gig I had a hand in procurin...

Re: JJ Burnel Planet Rock Radio This Sunday from 7pm

In JJ’s recent Rockonteurs interview it seemed pretty plain that JJ and Baz will continue to wrote songs. As he saw it, the only question was whether it came under The Stranglers umbrella, and in the interview he suggested it might. Dark Matters critical acclaim and chart placing surely only reinfo...

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

I listened last night, first time for a while and really enjoyed it, it stands alone as a fine album, pointless to compare to others, you either like or dislike. Lt Kudu. :smt005 I was on a three hour drive to Valencia this morning to drop a work colleague off at the airport. Stuck on Dark Matters....

Re: Dark Matters - Second Thoughts

I love Baz live, he rarely hits a bum note. Don't mind his vocals, on the softer songs he sounds really good. He doesn't seem to have penned much of the lyrics on this one though, probably had an artistic meltdown after '15 Steps'. I have tickets for a few a shows this time, decided to miss the Lon...
